Laying Down Grass Sod

Laying down sod correctly and in a way that ensures maximum health and growth for your new lawn takes more know how than simply unrolling it and dropping it on the lawn! It all starts with testing your soil to determine its acidity and degree of aeration; you will want to have us do this for a few weeks before we lay down your sodding.

Based on the test results we can adjust your soil if needed to make certain that the sod we lay down will thrive and grow effectively. Once the measurements and tests results are factored in, our landscape experts will deliver your sod, till and aerate the soil, and rake it level just before we lay the turf down. At this point we are ready to roll!

Our experts will unroll your sodding and carefully lay it down piece by piece, taking extra care to make sure there are no wrinkles or pockets of air between your sodding and your soil. We not only make sure that everything is cut to fill in, but take an extra step with a lawn roller to ensure that your new sodding stays in place by employing a lawn roller designed to pack it down tightly.

How to Care for Your Newly Installed Sod?

If you are wondering about how to care for your newly laid down sod, we are here to help! After installation, the first step of how to care for your sodding is watering it daily for the first week (unless Mother Nature does it for you), then decreasing the frequency to every other day. Too much water reaching the roots of your sod could make it soggy which in turn will inhibit the development of a strong root system. So, it should be taken care that you don’t overwater.

Consistency plays a major role here. A steady water supply to the roots will ensure the health of the root system. Your new sod should be watered for 15-20 minutes approximately at a time.

If the sod is installed during those summer days when the soil tends to shrink and dry, watering throughout the day will be the only solution to the problem. You will need 3 to 4 watering in a day throughout the season and when the temperature drops down you can lower it to twice or thrice a day. This routine should be strictly adhered to for at least 3 weeks till the new roots establish.

You must irrigate the new sow at the right time in the day. It is ideal to water in the morning and evening when the sun is low. Watering at high temperatures will cause it to evaporate and there will be a compromise over the amount of water that is required for the sow at its roots.

Soil with less moisture will be unable to retain those essential nutrients which are necessary for the proper well-being of the sow. If you have a healthy budget, you can also invest in a programmable sprinkler that can be timed to sprinkle the optimum amount of water.

It will take 10-14 days for the new roots to reach the ground. Once this cycle is completed you will have to mow the new lawn. To be specific you can mow after the 18th day provided it's not winter. If it’s winter it will take much longer for the sod roots to get to that health. Care should be taken so that you mow at the highest setting.

Do not mow more than one-third of the grass blade. Cutting closer to the root will drain all your efforts. Reduce the frequency of watering before mowing so that the soil strength is regained. You should not let anyone walk over the lawn including your pets as well. The pressure will crush those new fragile roots and the development stunts at the point.

As you continue to taper off watering your new lawn’s roots will be encouraged to grow deeper; deep grassroots is essential to having a bright, lush emerald lawn! If you see any puddles forming on your sodding reduce the amount of time you water to avoid over-saturation.

On week three only water your lawn twice, after which plan to add an inch of water to your lawn weekly, factoring in rainfall and other things. The first time you mow your new lawn should be in about ten days, or when your grass has reached a height of just under eight centimeters.

You will also want to make sure that when you mow you use a push mower for the first few times to avoid crushing during this time of infancy, and that you bag the clippings to avoid problems. For more info or for a free sodding installation estimate, call us today!

Another challenge you may experience when your newly laid down sod is installed is raccoons. With the extra watering that we recommend, it often brings worms and other bugs up to the surface under the sod. Very often raccoons will tear up the sod to gain access to the worms and grubs. You have to vigilant and check on your sod every morning as raccoons are most active at night.

To protect your new sod, we recommend a number of tactics to ensure we minimize damage to the sod. Installing a protective net over the sod, having a motion sensor sprinkler and lighting system and applying a pest deterrent spray or moth balls. All these strategies should help in reducing any sod damage, however, we cannot fully guarantee it.

Keeping the turf and soil moist throughout the day should be the thumb rule you should follow. The lawn shouldn’t be watered before the installation of new sods. Watering when it’s hot will be inefficient as it will evaporate at the roots. You will have to water the sod twice, one in the morning and one in the evening at the least. Make sure you do not overwater. Moreover, stay off from sod in your new lawn for 3 weeks.
